Wood Valentine Decor

Valentine's Day decor doesn't have to be something you display only once a year.  Designer Donna is on our blog with a wooden decor project you'll want to have hanging up long after Valentine's Day is over.

Time: 1 ½ hours
Level: intermediate
Size: 12” x 16”

Here's what you need:

  • Glue Dots® Advanced Strength adhesive (I used the Double-Sided Sheets, but you can also use the Dispenser)
  • Wood (I used two 12" x 16" piece of plywood)
  • Paint (I used Americana/Deco Art's Buttermilk, Tuscan Red, Moon Yellow, Indian Turquoise, and Dark Chocolate)
  • Letters
  • Hinges
  • Numbers
  • Jig Saw
  • Table Saw
  • Sand Paper
  • Spray Varnish (I used Krylon Matte)

Here's what you do:

  1. Draw a heart shape out on plywood and cut out with the jig saw.
  2. Cut heart into slats on table saw. Sand any areas as needed.
  3. Paint 12” x 16” piece using Deco Art Buttermilk arcrylic paint. Do not paint inside of the area where the heart will go.
  4. Paint each of the slats of the heart a different color and allow to dry. Apply additional coats as needed.
  5. This step is optional. I used Dark Chocolate paint that was watered down to stain the wood. Wipe on and then wipe off. Let dry.
  6. Adhere wood heart to 12” x 16” using Advanced Strength adhesive. Be sure to press firmly on the wood for a strong, secure bond.
  7. Tip: For faster application, use the dispenser listed in the supply list above.
  8. Add embellishments as desired and use a spray varnish to seal.

I used Tim Holtz Grungboard collection for the letters, numbers and hinges, but you can find similar products at a local store.
